New Category for 2026: Phone
Mar 14, 2026
The creative and technical possibilities of phone photography are constantly evolving.
This fully justifies Phone being increasingly included in professional photography competitions worldwide. The saying “the best camera is the one you have with you” is highly relevant.
Stripping back gear often helps the photographer stay more in the moment, leading to more natural, spontaneous, and candid images. The use of creative modes such as panoramas or simulated slow shutter speeds extend the capabilities of a traditional camera and allow for unique and interesting captures.
The image may be captured using the device’s native camera app or any third-party capture app, in JPEG, other native formats, or RAW if the device offers that option. The original capture file should be preserved, as this must be supplied for all entries (as with all categories). When editing, a new copy should be created rather than saving over the original file.
Editing must be completed on a mobile device using any app, from the native photo editor through to Lightroom Mobile. As with all categories that allow AI, AI tools are permitted only for the removal of collars, leashes, leadropes, reins, halters, or bridles. AI may not be used to remove anything else, or to add new elements.
Phone celebrates standout pet photography created entirely on mobile devices, proving that strong storytelling and technique aren’t limited to traditional cameras. This will be an exciting new category to judge and view, and we can’t wait to see what’s entered.
Here are some examples of the kinds of images you'd expect to be entered into this category:
