"The focus is good, everything that should be in focus is, the dogs' eyes, the owners' eyes, that plane is perfectly in focus. The other things that make this such an impactful image are the colour harmony, from the colour of the dog matching the owner's hair perfectly, and also the warm tones of the face. In addition to the colour harmony making this image so impactful is the framing."

"There are lots of layers in the image, I kind of feel like I’m being drawn down a magical tunnel into a different world. There are lots of little subtle touches to this that you notice the more that you look at it, and that’s the sign of a really good image, when you keep noticing little things."

"This year for my Judges’ Choice image, I wanted to celebrate an image that really stuck in my head - even though it was not an image that ended up placing in one of the final categories. I think that Michelle Russ’s quirky, colourful take on pet portraiture encapsulated everything that the Open Category is meant to be. It’s different, it’s creative, it was like nothing else we saw in the competition."
